True to live stories in a rural close-knit community
Journalist Fenna Wildspieker’s memories of the countryside where she grew up are of a narrow-minded farming community . “I didn’t leave, I fled!”, she says.
However, everything changes for Fenna when following her divorce, she is forced to look for a new home for her and her 8 year old daughter. Then on top of everything her father dies.
Fenna decides to move in with her mother. Suddenly, she is back in the place where she was born. Through this renewed contact with her roots, Fenna rediscovers the area – and herself.
In the meantime, more is happening in this out-of-the-way-corner of the countryside than you might think. Relationships come and go. Fenna’s brother, Alwie, is caught between massive debts and his extravagant wife Patricia. The romantic entanglements of Fenna’s youngest sister, Monkie, upsets the applecart when her boyfriend ends up in a wheelchair and needs her help, round the clock.
Then there is the well-heeled Bode family, where infidelity lurks just around the corner and money doesn’t seem to bring happiness to the children. These teenagers have cash on tap, which means they know no boundaries. The lack of attention from their parents finds expression in wild parties and destructiveness.
